Mayer explores multiple realities and the contrasts between reality and fiction in his film African Tales, which is set in Tanzania. The story addresses filmmaking in the midst of residual colonisation and an administered modernist tinge against the backdrop of a reality that is caught somewhere in the middle of negating values and traditions. A narrator guides the film, exposing Eurocentric expectations and generating compassion for the human condition.
