Condensing all of Schiller’s classic Die Räuber into a compact two acts, performance artist Bridge Markland uses puppets and voiceovers to tell the tale of good brother vs. bad brother for a contemporary English-speaking audience. Markland’s prowess as an adept manipulator of her box and its requisite settings and characters is remarkable, and the pre-recorded texts and snippets of over 150 songs make for an impressive, if a bit monotone, puppet soundtrack. Faust – her first and more successful box adaptation – is also playing at the English Theatre this month (July 5-6, 20:00).
