Up until couple of months ago, I didn’t seriously believe that a Brexit would come to pass. The Britain I know is too risk averse, too small-c conservative to take such a reckless leap into the unknown. But it seems the Leave campaign has succeeded in exploiting a widespread mistrust of government and the media, in order to peddle the notion that to vote Out is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to return to the glory days of the British Empire. I always assumed the debate would grow fairly toxic, with the odious Nigel Farage leading the charge to shut down our borders. But I’m truly dismayed by how great swathes of the public seem willing to align themselves with his insidious brand of xenophobia. I’m still clinging on to hope that good old British caution and common sense will prevail, but a long, nervous night awaits.
