Drink… and chill

Buy a beer and read, relax, socialize or people watch — or all of the above — at one of these laid-back locations.

Kjosk

A double-decker bus-turned-Späti permanently parked by the Spree end of Cuvrystraße, Kjosk offers a wide selection of reasonably priced beers (€1.50-2), soft drinks and snacks to be consumed on its grassy outdoor patio or taken to the neighbouring riverside tent encampment. In case of summer thunderstorms, head to the cosy upper deck of the bus, where a stash of board games awaits.

Banja Luka

The relaxed Biergarten draws a friendly mix of tourists, partiers and real live Kreuzbergers. With its easygoing ambiance, conversation flows as freely as the beer (from €2.50) to the backdrop of minimal electro beats. They also host the occasional concert.

Südblock

A stone’s throw from the backpacking tourists and disgruntled locals of Kottbusser Tor, lies Südblock’s sprawling outdoor patio. Day and night, queers mix with Turkish mothers, artists mix with workers, drinks mix with breakfast. The moderately priced tap beers and long drinks may not be cutting edge, but the social scene is one of a kind.

Clärchens Ballhaus

The verdant garden in the popular dance venue’s courtyard is packed with bohemian post-Wende East Berlin charm. Grass, trees and the Ballhaus’ crumbling grey facade provide the perfect backdrop for a leisurely glass of wine and a bite of Neapolitan-style brick-oven pizza (from €5).

Biergarten Willner-Brauerei-Berlin

Open since may in the former brewery’s yard, WBB bears the charm of a site in progress. Enclosed in century-old brick walls, it feels a bit like a junkyard (mind the big hole behind the deckchairs!). Here Pankow-P’Berg Wessi transplants can enjoy tap beers from their Heimat, like Swabian Allgäuer Büble or Bavarian König Ludwig. Others will just get a Berliner Pilsner and a bratwurst, and relax under one of the two beautiful linden trees.
