Assayas revisits the 1970s of his adolescence, the same era portrayed in his 1994 masterpiece L’eau froide. Gilles (Mètayer) serves as the director’s alter ego, a 17-year-old whose changing political convictions are reflected in his move from painting to filmmaking. Après mai conveys the disorientation of the post-1968 generation with lyrical cinematography. Though imbued with reverential romanticism, it nonetheless evokes the tempestuous spirit of youth.
