If you’re looking for a good dose of classic French dramady, “Au bout du Conte” hits the spot.
This is trademark French human dramedy: slices of life observed with that blend of deadpan causticity and gentle generosity for which the Bacri-Jaoui duo have been renowned since their art-house hit The Taste of Others. Perfectly written dialogue makes up for the limited scope of material: the everyday (e)motions of normal people, in this case the red-riding-hood romance of a twentysomething (the excellent Bonitzer) and the late-midlife turmoil of her seniors. One-liners fly, and often hit home. It’s hard not to identify with the characters’ circumstances, sometimes with a self-derisive laugh.
Au bout du Conte (Unter dem Regenbogen) | Directed by Agnès Jaoui (France 2013) with Agathe Bonitzer, Agnès Jaoui, Bacri. Starts October 17
