The well anticipated fifth and final film in the Twilight Saga culminates in a stand-off on an ice plain in North America between two strange groupings. On the one hand, we have a good vampire dream team whose ranks now also enfolded Tyra Banks as a silent Amazon, and on the other, the nasties Volturi who have taken umbrage at Bella and Edward’s new child Renesmee. Will this ‘rebirth’ neologism of a name spawn a generation of kids explaining their parents’ proclivities to irritated teachers? Watch this space.
Director Condon does not fail to provide the inevitably powerful and dramatic climactic scene that everyone had hoped for and some viewers may derive some strange satisfaction from Kristen Stewart’s progression from the young doe-eyed girl with a crush to a hot sexy vampire with a defensive maternal streak. The much hyped sex life of two tireless vampires takes place in a cottage built, it seems, pretty much for that purpose on the Cullen family grounds. A lot of trouble for some very hazy peeks at what’s going on. Not all that much, apparently.
Blood-sucking fans will doubtless thrill to the climax of a five-year saga and the fact that teen idols Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner have come aways in terms of acting. Detractors are likely to remain unconvinced. The ending, though, is worth staying for. Condon has finally developed a sense of humour. You won’t see this one coming.
