Herzog is amongst the very select few that have ever been allowed to enter the Chauvet Cave, where the world’s oldest cave paintings were discovered. He doesn’t fail to deliver his signature outlandish philosophising – filtered through the magic of his extraordinary accent – and some of his interview subjects are just as eccentric as anything found in his more unconventional documentaries. By bringing out the curvatures of the cave, the 3D actually endows the paintings with a vitality that greatly enriches their appreciation.
