The unwavering dream

OUT NOW! CINEMA JENIN portrays the obstacles to reopen a historical Palestinian cinema and cultural centre.

Closed during the 1987 intifada, the cinema in Jenin on the West Bank was vital to Palestinian cultural life. In 2008, German filmmaker Vetter began the process of negotiating the renovation and eventual reopening of that cinema. Supported by local and German volunteers and by Israeli actor Juliano Mer-Khamis (assassinated in 2011), Vetter’s film indulges the prevalent chaos in an explosive matrix of political, social and economic factors: a triumph for the shining achievement on which it ends.

Cinema Jenin: The Story of a Dream | Directed by Marcus Vetter (Israel, Germany 2012), documentary with Ismail Khatib, Fakhri Hamad, Juliano Mer-Khamis. Starts June 28
