Death down under

OUT NOW! THE TREE is a little slow, but it'll really grow on you.

An idyllic family in the Australian outback is torn to pieces by the untimely death of the father. Centered around a giant fig tree on their property in which the spirit of the father may or may not live on, the story takes time to unfold and is often told through silence, and in any number of original, poetic images. The lack of pace is a strength as well as a weakness in this drama that mainly works thanks to the breathtaking scenery, an intense Gainsbourg as the mourning widow, and a bunch of very impressive child actors.

THE TREE | Directed by Julie Bertucelli (France 2010) with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Morgana Davies. Opens March 3
