Set in the isolated world of Father, Mother, Klaus and the newly arrived Student, who is coaxed into teaching ‘eight-year-old’ Klaus how to be president, Chryssos’ future cult-comedy is a welcome mind-fuck of the highest order. Through truly uncanny characters, sharp cinematography and a perfect score from Leonard Petersen, Der Bunker becomes not only an institutional study but a metaphor for family as religion and, just like the eponymous hideout, it sucks you in and keeps you there long after the war’s over.
Der Bunker | Directed by Nikias Chryssos (Germany 2015) with Pit Bukowski, Daniel Fripan, Oona von Maydell. Starts January 21.
