In a fortuitous complement to this month’s Exberliner feature on Berlin’s acting schools, a group of student actors is given the chance to act at the Volksbühne. Bypassing more obvious choices, the professional director picks a lead whose vulnerability he recognises and exploits, stripping down her personality until she is literally and metaphorically naked – and no longer able to play her sustaining real-life role of sister to a severely handicapped girl. A no-holds-barred look at what it takes to make the cut, on the stage and off.
Die Unsichtbare | Directed by Christian Schwochow (Germany 2011) with Stine Fischer Christensen, Ulrich Noethen. Starts February 9
