Set in Pompeii in 79 AD around the time of Mount Vesuvius’ historical eruption, this disaster film also tells the story of an unusual love triangle between a gladiator, a merchant’s daughter and a Roman senator. The historical perspective makes for an interesting take on the genre, but even though the visuals are beautiful and Sutherland and Harington give convincing performances, it’s not enough to make up for the film’s less than stellar writing.
