Camp punishment

OUT NOW! FREISTATT is a gritty coming-of-age story of a boy sent to a juvenile delinquent camp where violence and back-breaking discipline is used to iron out his rebellious character.

When 14-year-
old Wolfgang is sent to a
juvenile delinquent labour
 camp in 1968, sadistic
 educators do everything
they can to trample his
rebellious spirit. Situated
in North Germany and surrounded by deadly swamp, Freistatt is bathed in ominous blue and grey through Judith Kaufmann’s cinematography. Highlighted by Hofmann’s nuanced and spine-chilling performance, this powerful adaption of true events depicts the cruel rite of passage and loss of innocence suffered by these young abandoned souls.
