Lakino: Latin American flavour on film

In cooperation with Exberliner, this year's Lakino Film Festival (Oct 8-13) is the biggest one yet, bringing 17 Latin American films to Berlin in addition to workshops, discussions and parties (including a piñata party). Don't miss it!

Exberliner is proud to co-sponsor this year’s Lakino Festival, which presents a sweeping Latin American panorama and cinematic tasting menu of independent flavours.

In its fourth year, Lakino has morphed into a proper film festival – complete with sections (Competition and Panorama), a four-member jury and awards. Some 17 films are featured, many Spanish, some Portuguese and all with English subtitles.

Fiction highlights include Adrián Saba’s lyrically dystopian The Cleaner, a tale of surprising warmth set in a drab mid-apocalypse Lima.

In the documentary section, José Luis García’s offbeat The Girl From The South charts the awkward odyssey of an Argentinean filmmaker as he strives to connect with a magnetic south Korean woman who crossed into North Korea in 1989 to preach reunification.

The new Film Lab at the neighbouring Volksbühne’s Grüner Salon hosts panel discussions and workshops for filmmakers – this year’s topics include distribution in the digital age and the ins and outs of financing an independent production.

There will also be an open screening for short films, kid-friendly events including a piñata party, and a Latin American book fair.

The fun kicks off at Babylon Mitte on October 8 with a screening of Amar Escalate’s Cannes-awarded Heli and ends in Ballhaus Rixdorf on Columbus Day with a closing party – just before the awards are awarded on Sunday!

Stay tuned for a new sister event in the spring dedicated to shorts. For all dates and times, see www.lakino.com.
