Italian job botched

OUT NOW! L'ITALIEN tries to tackle integration with humour and a straight face – but neither really work.

A serious discussion of France’s integration issues that simultaneously amuses the audience with farcical péripéties of Arab vs. French culture shock may sound good – but this feels recycled. The generic protagonist-trapped-in-a-lie-who-almost-loses-everything plot (here: Arab man pretends he’s Italian) fails to generate any new interest, and questions like, “would you have hired me if I was named Mourad Ben Saoud instead of Dino?” are much too simplistic and obvious for such a complex theme.

L’ITALIEN | Directed by Olivier Baroux (France 2010) with Kad Merad. Opens January 13.
