Bringing the vigour and vibrancy of Latin America to Berlin, the third Lakino Short Film Festival offers a rich visual feast to celebrate the diversity of the continent’s emerging filmmakers and artists.
The festival begins with a big event including the exhibition opening of Mascaras Y Escultura, (Oct 10, 19:00) showing the sculptures and masks of Berlin-based Peruvian artist Edmundo Torres. The band Conjunto Poseido, also based in Berlin, will perform live as a prelude to the first screenings, which include the Columbian film Los Retratos directed by Iván D. Gaona, which follows the beautifully naïve grandma Paulina who takes part in a market raffle hoping to win a hen but winds up with a Polaroid camera. By contrast, the Peruvian movie, Último Recurso, is a thriller centered on a failed abduction.
Other films to look out for are Brazilian film Qual Queijo Voce Quer? (Oct 11, 19:00 and Oct 12, 20:30) in which a simple request for cheese sparks a heated reflection on an old couple’s long life together. The documentary Los Invisbles (Oct 11, 19:45 and Oct 14, 20:45) showcases the work of Gael Garcia Bernal, actor now turned director, who has teamed up with Amnesty International to shed light upon the gut-wrenching plight of Mexicans attempting to cross the border into the United States.
