Bores don’t cry

OUT NOW! Lengthy transsexual drama LAURENCE ANYWAYS is brightly dressed but a little vacant.

Dolan’s third feature explores the mental impact of Laurence’s announcement to girlfriend Frederique that he wants to live as a woman. Despite 168 minutes of screen time and a unique soundtrack that merges rock, pop and classical piano solos, the movie’s 1980/1990s feel comes across as self-consciously gaudy and doesn’t do full justice to the issues at stake: a partner’s attempt at loyalty, parental apprehension and social rejection in the face of radical lifestyle change.

Laurence Anyways | Directed by Xavier Dolan (Canada 2012) with Melvil Poupard, Suzanne Clement, Nathalie Baye. Opens June 27.
