Kiddie love

OUT NOW! Gondry's latest outing, L’ÉCUME DES JOURS delivers a familiarly sweet-faced Audrey Tautou a little to simply for the source material.

As full of bouncy stop-motion animated objects as the metaphorically tubercular, lily pad-affected lungs of heroine Chloé, Gondry’s rendition of Boris Vian’s 1947 fantasy on love, death and philosophy dabbles as whimsically in altered states as the book. But Tautou looks too familiar as the doomed, sweet-faced muse of cocktail-inventing Colin and Omar Sy’s stint as genial factotum feels no more original. Existential love for beginners should not be confused with a kiddies’ version – which it very nearly is here.

L’écume des jours | Directed by Michel Gondry (France, Belgium 2013) with Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy. Starts October 3
