Monsieur Joubert (Luchini), an archetypal petit bourgeois, leads a humdrum yet content married life until Maria, a vivacious Spanish maid, introduces joie de vivre into the equation, bringing his whole routine into disarray. Despite its bourgeois vs. proletarian premise, the film doesn’t aim for serious commentary, remaining satisfied with delivering jokes based on amicable class stereotypes and playing on the disparity between French conceit and Spanish exuberance. Luchini plays the role he has long typecast for himself and the result is a cute little comedy sans plus.
