A lonely accountant (Khan) in Mumbai opens his lunchbox one day to find that a wrong delivery by Dabbawallas (delivery men) has landed him with the lunch of a lifetime – prepared by a lonely woman (Kaur) trying to recapture an errant husband’s attentions. A lunchbox correspondence ensues, opening up a brief and small vista of escape from the isolation and resignation of city life. A favourite at Cannes, Batra’s halting script and uncluttered direction create a perfect vehicle for small lives in vast places.
Lunchbox | Directed by Ritesh Batra (India 2013) with Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Starts November 21
