The complex aftermath of the Bosnian War finds eloquent expression in a story involving the father of a Serbian soldier battered to death in defence of a Muslim cigarette vendor who finds himself, 12 years on, employing the son of his son’s killer. Golubovic anchors the meta-themes of vengeance and forgiveness in utterly believable characters and a scenario which, if geographically stretched to include a subplot on the Muslim’s new life in Germany, draws its metaphorical circles with precision, conviction and grace.
