An ex-boxer (Jackman) forges a relationship with his estranged son amidst the illustrious futuristic world of robot boxing. The admittedly impressive robots cannot make up for the lack of meaningful dialogue, and the film relies instead on the soundtrack of such literate auteurs as Eminem and other hip pop drivel. Naturally related to Rocky et al, Real Steel takes the punches but doesn’t deliver many of its own, a tactic which left lots of boxers with brain damage and may well do the same to its viewers.
Real Steel | Directed by Shawn Levy (USA 2011) with Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goya. Starts November 3
