Nothing to declare

OUT NOW! RIEN Á DÉCLARER is just rehashing a prior success with a new cast of slapstick stereotypes.

When the border between France and Belgium is abolished in the 1990s, tensions between Belgian customs official Ruben Vandevoorde and his French counterpart Mathias Ducatel come to a head. That the Frenchman is secretly in love with the sister of his Francophobe opponent only adds to the complications. Boon’s decision to use stereotypes in his depiction of the relationship between the neighboring countries and to make those stereotypes the film’s theme leaves us with little more than a rather lame rehash of his phenomenally successful Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis.

Rien à déclarer | Directed by Dany Boon (France 2010) with Benoît Poelvoorde, Dany Boon. Opened July 28
