OUT NOW! SHANGHAI is cobbled together crap with no real sense of style or direction.

Shanghai wants to be Wong Kar-Wai and The Maltese Falcon rolled into one – or maybe that was just us grappling for a reason this film exists. We couldn’t really find one. With pretentious dialogue (“the heart is never neutral”), characters that disappear without further comment and sets that look like they were left over from the opening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Shanghai even manages to waste talent like Hugh Bonneville in a thankless supporting role.

SHANGHAI | Directed by Mikael Håfström (USA, China 2010) with John Cusack, Li Gong, Chow Yun-Fat. Opens August 11
