Words fail

OUT NOW! With stellar casting and an intriguing plot line THE BOOK THIEF ultimately fails to deliver.

With Watson and Rush on board, something much better could – and should – have been made of a young girl’s discovery of books and basic decency when she’s fostered with a childless couple in rural Germany in the run-up to WWII, helping to save the life of a young Jewish man hidden in the cellar by reading to him during protracted sickness. Handicapped at every cobbled street corner by screenplay, set and score, however, all that’s left is picturesque slush.

The Book Thief | Directed by Brian Percival (USA, Germany 2013) with Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson. Starts March 13
