Seventy Irish women of all ages talk about their lives and the men in them: fathers, boyfriends, husbands, sons. Sounds arid, but Kevin Wardrop’s debut documentary wrests something warm and genuine from a simple idea. Quietly exact editing and a loving eye for the tiny gestures that compose a life mine the humour and heartbreak from each brief segment, filmed in the subjects’ own homes. It’s no thrill ride and neither is it interested in challenging norms, but it’s hard to be entirely unmoved.
His and Hers | Directed by Kevin Wardrop (Ireland 2009) Documentary, starts July 4.
