Should you fancy a trip out of town, the Cottbus Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday (Nov 8). This small Brandenburg city, around an hour southeast of Berlin, will be showcasing the cream of contemporary eastern European cinema over six days. Check out our festival preview for a handful of top picks. Out in local Kinos this week, Morris from America is fresh, funny coming-of-age tale about an African-American teen living in Heidelberg – recommended viewing for all Ausländer. Read our interview with director Chad Hartigan for the story behind this Sundance smash. Also on general release, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Picture is a richly satisfying documentary portrait of the legendary photographer. And finally, on Monday (Nov 7), join us at Lichtblick Kino for an EXBlicks preview of The GDR Complex, which tells the remarkable true story of gay, conservative ex-GDR citizen Mario Röllig. Director Jochen Hick will introduce the film himself.
