Based on reformed pimp and karate teacher Andreas Marquardt’s autobiography, Von Praunheim’s Härte uses documentary and drama to unpick the vicious cycle of violence, as Andy transforms from victim to abuser. Taking its cue from interviews, the monochrome action takes place on a stage-set with backdrops projected onto screens. But it’s the colourful performances from Koffler and Heyer as Marquardt and Marion, his prostitute and muse, that really shine. Exposing the psychological effects of child abuse, Härte rocks a powerful sucker-punch of tough love.
