Mundane words

OUT NOW! Even with interesting content and genuine theatrical presence, THE WORDS putters out.

Rory Jansen (Cooper) has it all (hunky body, supportive girlfriend) except one thing: a published novel… until he plagiarises a forgotten love story. Things get complicated when he crosses paths with the true author. This directorial debut convincingly draws us into a multi-layered world of ‘stories within stories’, including a heartfelt performance from Irons. But what could have been a self-reflexive exploration of the gap between fiction and reality is tarnished by the ‘too little, too late’ ending, failing to tie up the plot as a satisfying book might.

The Words | Directed by Brian Klugman, Lee Sternthal (USA 2012) with Dennis Quaid, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana. Starts May 23
