What should you do if you get a letter?

Christian Solmecke: “First, you shouldn’t ignore it. But you shouldn’t necessarily just sign whatever cease-and-desist declarations they send you either. There are a lot of standard declarations (Unterlassungserklärungen) floating around in the internet. But you need to be careful, because not all law firms accept them.”

“The first thing you should do is Google the name of the law firm you got the letter from. Then usually you’ll already find a lot of information about how you should react. Then you should contact a lawyer who specialises in the area and agree on a standard fee – usually between €400 and €600 – and he will make a modified declaration for you and appeal against the amount of money they want. That way you will avoid an expensive legal battle.”
