A view from the shadows

OUT NOW! A cinematic journey through the African scrublands is visually challenging, but WHITE SHADOW's intensely individual point of view is certainly its strength.

Exec-produced by Ryan Gosling and recently honoured at Potsdam’s film festival, Noaz Deshe’s story of a black albino teenager hunted for his salutary body parts through East Africa’s cities and semi arid scrublands is a huge visual challenge, combining shaky night-time chases with themes of new urban squalor and archaic African ritual. Stricter editing might have tightened the vision, but would also doubtless have jeopardised the intensely individual point of view: the film’s main strength.

White Shadow | Directed by Noaz Deshe (Tanzania, Italy, Germany 2014) with Hamisi Bazili, Salum Abdallah, Riziki Ally. Starts November 6
