To burrow Burroughs

OUT NOW! WILLIAM S: BURROUGHS: A MAN WITHIN does what you would guess and well.

We’ve come a ways since US censors banned Burroughs’Naked Lunch for obscenity in 1959. For those of you unfamiliar with these issues and the other aspects of Burroughs’ legacy that set the course for counter (and punk) culture, this documentary is a must, setting footage of and interviews with the man himself alongside contributions from acolytes, disciples and contemporaries. The hagiographical tone is perhaps inevitable but still manages to leave plenty of space for the good stuff: the drugs, the sex and all the rest.

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within| Directed by Yony Leyser (USA 2010), documentary, with Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant et al. Starts January 12
