This is the result of people who have not lived in the real world for decades trying to be topical. Hanks does a good nice guy, but he is entirely unconvincing, both as a ‘Umart’ salesman getting fired and as a mature student taking classes so that this never happens to him again, almost as unconvincing as his fellow students. Larry Crowne is his baby – he directed and co-wrote the script – but especially the latter sounds like it was supplied by a community college rhetorics class of the kind he’s taking in the film.
Larry Crowne | Directed by Tom Hanks (USA 2011) with Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts. Opens June 30
