Feel like lunching on Brie, Morbier, Tomme de Savoie, pears and walnuts and a quick shop for dessert? Then café/boutique fusion Schmilblick in Friedrichshain is the place to go. Founded by three French friends Maya Sriqui, Ludovic Legrand and Johanna Rudowski in 2020, the café’s exterior might seem nondescript, but a small blackboard sign saying “Get cosy with us” tells you all you need to know.
One half of the space is a homeware store curated by co-owner and founder of Garden State Candles, Maya Sriqui. The range includes dainty dried bouquets, scented soy candles and tiny glass terrariums which you can learn to craft yourself in one of the many workshops Schmilblick offers. The other half of Schmilblick is a café serving delicious French-inspired lunches – soup of the day and baguettes – and, on the weekend, brunches too. If you’re in the mood for something smaller, you can feast on home-baked brioches or their fluffy chocolate madeleines, all made by in-house pâtissier Ludovic Legrand.
The vibe here is relaxed and the air is filled with jazz and French bavardage. Amidst a jumble of nouveau-rustic wooden furniture, a small bookshelf on the wall contains a selection French and German literature for customers to consume over a raspberry, banana and lemon smoothie or a café au lait. Or brush up on both your French and your chess skills on one of the many échiquiers scattered across the tables.
