Maki: Roll ’em if you got ’em

Giving a whole new meaning to the term Asian fusion, sandwich classics like BLT and Italian veg combine with rice and seaweed casing for a handheld lunch that really delivers at fresh German startup Maki.

Hot off the heels of Berlin’s onigiri craze, similarly rice-centric German startup Maki delivers a convenient, handheld lunch straight into the laps of Mitte office drones.

Bearing only a superficial resemblance to actual sushi, the stubby rolls (€2.50- 2.80) come wrapped in seaweed or vegetable paper, ready to be dunked into wasabi mayo or honey mustard (€0.30).

It takes two to get full, so combine a Japanese-inflected classic like salmon, unagi or chicken teriyaki with an unorthodox Italian Roll (sun-dried tomato, zucchini and cream cheese) or BLT Roll (pretty much what it sounds like, plus avocado) – both surprisingly palatable.
