Six photographic portraits of LGBTQ adults between the ages of 56 and 84 tell personal stories of struggle, triumph and perseverance.

The project is co-curated by Schomburg Center Associate Curator of Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division and founder of ITLA, Steven G. Fullwood and SAGE Center Harlem program coordinator and cultural tastemaker Peter “Souleo” Wright.

Reflecting the larger social and cultural issues of the Black LGBTQ community, the Magnum Foundation Fellow Jasper Briggs’ commissioned portraits bring you face to face with those who have contributed to the advancement of LGBTQ rights in a community often relegated to the sidelines. “Too often the experiences of black LGBTQ individuals are erased out of history” said Steven Fullwood, one of the co-curators. “So with this photography project we aim to empower them as they take control of their narrative and public representation.
