Mmuseumm opened in 2012. Artist, curator Alex Kalman and two of his friends converted a defunct elevator shaft into the smallest museum in New York City.
Located on Cortlandt Alley between Franklin Street and White Street, the Mmuseumm does not house artworks, but it definitely turns everyday objects and banal offerings, such as a pile of broken glass from New York City, into something totally new.
“We’re thinking about narratives and ideas that connect us as humans and then [we] illustrate those with objects,” Kalman told NYMag.
Now entering its fifth season, it might just be on its way to become a recognized cultural destination.
Mmuseumm I Thurs. & Fri 6-9pm, Sat. & Sun noon-6pm. Also visible 24/7 through the viewing windows and by calling into the audio guide from your phone.
