If our summer special isn’t enough to tempt you into Berlin’s hinterlands, one of this summer’s festivals certainly will.
Mainstream This year’s Melt! (Jul 15-17) brings Peaches, Tame Impala, Deichkind, Disclosure and basically half of Berlin out to Ferropolis. A weekend before that (Jul 8-10), the same site sees The Roots, Wiz Khalifa and Angel Haze headline reggae/hip-hop fest Splash!. They’ll also be screening the Euro football finals (sorry, A$AP Ferg).
Sophisticated Classically-minded Berliners, never fear; you don’t have to get dirty in the mosh-pits to enjoy some summer music. Schloss Rheinsberg’s seven week Kammeroper festival (Jun 24-Aug 13, Rheinsberg) showcases the best of young global operatic talent within the beautiful castle grounds.
Psyched-out For some truly alternative partying, head to the Goa-tastic Antaris Project (Jul 15-18, Stölln), where you’ll find trippy visuals, laser shows, DJs named after psilocybin mushroom strains and workshops on Ayurveda and hula-hooping.
Neo-hippy If you’re looking to throw on some glittery face paint, get magical in a forest and become one with nature, there’s no end of festivals to choose from. All hosting similar line-ups of the electronic-indie-alternative persuasion, these top picks come based on the standard of yoga on offer: try Klangyoga at Wild Möhre (Aug 12-14, Altdöbern), Acroyoga at Artlake (Aug 19-21, Lausitz), or straight-up Hatha at Uckeralm (Jul 29-31, Grünz).
Cinephile For those poor non-musical types who often seem to get neglected when the summer months hit, you’ve not been forgotten. The Mobile Kino Weekender (Jul 29-31, Klingemühle) has been designed with you in mind: three cinema screens showing new releases, indie documentaries and sleepaway camp horror classics by a scenic lake at a former GDR holiday camp.
Rural Retreat You love excursions to the countryside, yet you always feel a little lost due to the lack of an existing Exbrandenburger? Worry not! In it’s second year, the good people and Storkow natives behind alinae lumr (Aug 26-28) not only present you with exquisite performances by Zoot Woman to Liima to Einar Stray Orchestra staged in all of the city’s picturesque nooks and crannies, but with guided tours through the old town alongside theatrical screenings, workshops and exhibitions as well.
