With debates over blackface, racist kids’ books and immigration still raging, Ballhaus Naunynstraße kicks off the 2013/14 season by turning its attention to “Afropolitan Berlin” in a month-long festival.
And about half the program is accessible to non-German speakers. The play Schwarz Tragen (Sep 24, 26-30, 20:00) and the film Zumbi somos Nós (Sep 15, 20:00) are shown with English surtitles.
Grada Kilomba’s English-language work Plantation Memories – Episodes of Everyday Racism (Sept 9, 20:00) will be presented as a dramatic reading.
And while the first part of the double bill Repitologia/Shoot First (Sep 12-14, 20:00) is in Portuguese and shown with German surtitles, the second is a movementbased piece about the now infamous case of hoodie-wearing Trayvon Martin in Stand-Your-Ground Florida.
