From June 1st to September 9th 2023, the Globe Berlin in Charlottenburg will once again be a hotspot for popular international theatre and relaxed outdoor concerts.

Chaos & Chance is this year’s motto and the Globe Ensemble Berlin will aptly open the season on the temporary Open-O-Stage with the premiere of Shakespeare’s comedy classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Mathias Schönsee. This is followed by revivals of the children’s play Ameley der Biber & der König auf dem Dach by Büchner Prize winner Tankred Dorst, as well as Shakespeare’s works The Tempest, As You Like It and Romeo & Juliet.

Friedrich Schiller’s drama Maria Stuart and the musical theatre evening As the Crow Flies on the theme of home and cultural identity are back in the programme as well. Chamber play formats such as Plato’s Phaidon, George Orwell’s 1984, Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and Stefan Zweig’s 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman complete the programme, and almost every week there is authentic 1930s jazz with The Swingin’ Hermlins. English-language performances of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as Wiebke Acton’s As The Crow Flies appeal especially to international audiences.

The wooden components of the former Schwäbisch Hall Globe Theatre are still lying dismantled on the site in Sömmeringstraße. But soon a circular theatre building that has already been operated successfully will continue to be used here. The building is modelled on Shakespeare’s legendary arena and measures 14.5 metres in height, 26 metres in diameter and has place for about 690 visitors on three floors. The Globe Berlin will offer spectacular, sensual and close-to-the-audience theatre for people of all ages, from different cultural backgrounds and about current social issues.

Until the theatre is (re)built, a ring-shaped catwalk-like stage (the Open-O-Stage) made of wooden components of the future Globe Berlin will serve as an open air stage. Here the audience sits in the middle of the action, with a view of the greenery and an impressive urban backdrop. The non-profit Globe Berlin Theater GmbH has been organising successful summer seasons on site since 2019. Since then, more than 25,000 visitors have already taken their seats in the ring here during the summer months to enjoy the colourful, multilingual program of drama, spoken word and concerts.

In collaboration with TipBerlin, Exberliner will be hosting a special preview performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the summer solstice (June 21st). Tickets cost €28 each and are available on the Eventbrite website. Click here for more information.
