From the depths of winter (or spring) grey to the gaggle of gargantuan, foreboding buildings, Berlin has a knack for being depressive. Does the city suck joy and motivation from our tender spirits, or does it simply attract a kind of sombre archetype?

Artists Cameron Tauschke, from Australia, and Sam Melser, from New Zealand, used David Bowie’s melancholic song “Subterraneans” as a launching pad for their upcoming collaborative exhibition.

Yet Cameron insists that the show is not about Bowie but rather Berlin’s consistent inclination towards sorrow. The artists share countless similarities in their work, something that makes collaboration come naturally.

Tauschke’s landscape abstractions reveal textures and various tonalities offered by one single colour. Melser has prepared a darkroom installation. Another facet of sadness explored by the artists is space, or lack thereof, and the palpable results of precious, limited space on society’s mood.
