It's hard to dislike big female-empowerment dramas that make no apologies for their championship of sisterhood, but something about this one – which sees secrets spilled, struggles overcome and pains shared as a group of girlfriends reunite for a surprise wedding – just seems a tad too convenient. To be sure, the picturesque Indian countryside is ably captured and there's a by turns joyous/indignant vibe coursing through the narrative that's undeniably catchy, so those out for a not-too-challenging, unabashedly emotional crowdpleaser will get their money's worth. As for the rest of us who prefer nuance to just rousing good vibe, the Goddesses didn't really answer our prayers this time.
Angry Indian Goddesses | Directed by Pan Nalin (India, Germany 2015) with Amrit Maghera, Rajshri Deshpande. Starts June 16.
