Pussy riot
Pussy versus Putin screens on December 11, 9pm at Volksbühne.
Pussy versus Putin documents the road that ultimately led to the imprisonment of three members of the punk band in August 2012: from the rehearsals, public appearances, arrests and trial to the protests outside the court.
In contrast to the BBC documentary that appeared earlier this year, this film is a real insider’s look into the punk collective, filled with live performance footage, the camera following the protagonists up to the cell they’re thrown into and capturing a Gogol-esque questioning session by dumbfounded police officers.
The planned screening at the Festiwelt film festival in August was cancelled at the last minute under pressure and threats from Pussy Riot supporters – a somewhat surprising decision given the supportive tone of the documentary for a movement that has come to embody freedom of speech in the face of political tyranny. Exberliner welcomes the first German public screening of this enlightening documentary.
