As Turkey's answer to The Virgin Suicides, this debut feature about five sisters growing up in a climate of female oppression lingers behind forbidding walls to ponder the mystery of the girls' hearts. Though unambitious in scope or approach, it sizzles with a vitality and warmth that proves genuinely infectious. Even more precious is the communal spirit that Ergüven so affectionately captures, which continues to glow as the community itself slowly dies away.
Mustang | Directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven (France, Turkey, Germany, Qatar 2015) with Günes Sensoy, Doga Zeynep Doguslu, Tugba Sunguroglu. Starts February 25
