This year’s Interfilm Festival presents a mind-boggling 500 short films.
Encompassing everything from absurdist comedy to socially conscious non-fiction, there’s truly something for everyone. In “Refugee Blues”, a W.H. Auden poem is used to remind us of parallels between the current European migrant crisis and past human tragedies. Meanwhile “Irregulars” (photo), headlining the Italian programme, tells the story of a young man unable to find his bearings in a racist and petulant society. The animation selection is also particularly strong: check out the poetic “Chinese Animation Education” and Volker Schlecht and Alexander Lahl's “Kaputt”, in which the Berlin-based artist duo relates the stories of two former GDR prisoners in fine pencil drawings and sparse crimson paint, suggesting a disrupted inner world in which the past still lingers.
