Shahada
This is clearly a first film, with its insistence that every sentence, every shot is the most important thing you’ve ever seen or heard – but it’s also unusually well-directed for a debut. Burhan Qurbani's Shahada follows the intersecting lives of several Berliners who go to the same mosque; all are struggling with how to square some serious moral issues, their daily lives and their desires for the future with their religion. Curiously German in its extreme earnestness. Opens September 30. German OV .
