Millenium Mambo
One of the most influential figures of contemporary cinema, Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien has won countless awards worldwide. For those who aren’t yet familiar with the old master’s singular style, the retrospective Also Like Life at Zeughauskino (mostly with English subtitles) presents an unmissable opportunity to catch up.
Check out Venice Film Festival Golden Lion winner A City of Sadness (Jan 19, 20:00), a 2.5-hour epic that recounts the complex political situation and human fates in Taiwan when the island was turned over from Japanese colonisation after WWII.
Get knocked out by Hou’s one-of-a-kind aesthetics in Millennium Mambo (Feb 6, 21:00, photo) or Three Times (Feb 9, 20:00), which solidified cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-Bin’s legendary status and turned actress Shu Qi a star.
Also don’t forget Le voyage du ballon rouge (Feb 7, 20:30; Feb 10, 20:00), a Paris-set drama powered by the beautiful chemistry between Hou and an incandescent Juliette Binoche.
And why stop there? See the full programme here.
