DIY free-for-all

BEST OF BERLIN: On Sep 14, DIY lovers get a big bash. Recycled Creativity celebrates its fifth anniversary at the Lohmühle trailer park, with clothing swaps, yoga, music, and free bites. Just bring your old junk so it can be someone else's treasure.

Call it a backlash to our digital existence or an IRL corollary to the startup scene: suddenly, all of Berlin is clamouring to get its hands dirty. Betahaus’ fourth Maker Weekend packed in the crowds last month, and September 11-15 sees the RE:MAKE festival take over Platoon Kunsthalle.

But for a real DIY experience featuring actual trash, freegan cuisine and a decided lack of Arduino, head to the fifth anniversary of the scrappiest fest of all: Recycled Creativity. Taking place on September 14 at and around the Lohmühle trailer park, the festival gives Berlin’s creative class the chance to get hands-on and make new out of old while having a lot of fun – for free!

Expect activities such as a clothing swap shop and an upcycling workshop, a furniture clinic, recycled jewellery making and of course… yoga. There will also be art installations, live music, film screenings and an afterparty.

“The volunteers make the festival what it is,” says organiser Rüta Vimba. Even the caterers and chefs are working for free; and, yes, the food is free as well. Just remember, you’re supposed to pitch in with some participative enthusiasm, and donations (either money or old junk) are always welcome.

Recycled Creativity, Sep 14, Lohmühlenstr. 17, Treptow, U-Bhf Görlitzer Bahnhof, see Facebook page for details and schedule.
